EID is a disorder that involves emotions, thinking patterns, and behavior. People with EID experience a high level of intensity of all emotions, and longer periods before emotions return to baseline. This emotional intensity is accompanied by distorted thoughts and potentially destructive behaviors in an attempt to escape emotional pain. Treatment involves teaching and using skills to regulate emotions, identify and challenge distortions in thinking, and practice healthier coping behaviors.
EMDR (Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desensitization)
EMDR is a method of psychotherapy that incorporates the use of eye movements and positive thoughts and beliefs to help clients reprocess traumatic memories. The process in effect “unfreezes” memories that have not been processed normally because of the high degree of distress that was experienced. EMDR has also proven effective in the treatment of panic attacks, phobias, performance anxiety, and complicated grief. For more information on EMDR, go to the EMDR Institute website.
